Systemic Sclerosis Presenting with Simultaneous Retinal Vasculitis in One Eye and Optic Neuritis in the other along with Severe Immune Haemolytic Anaemia Keywords: Systemic sclerosis, Retinal vasculitis, Optic neuritis, Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia

Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disorder which involves multiple systems in a chronic progressive manner. Micro–angiopathic haemolytic anaemia is a distinguished feature of “scleroderma renal crisis”, which is manifested by severe hypertension, a rapidly progressing renal dysfunction and hyperreninaemia and is seen in patients with an early, diffuse form of the disease. A nervou...

Human parvovirus B 19 and Epstein-Barr virus co-infection in a child with hereditary spherocytosis.

BACKGROUND In patients with chronic congenital haemolytic disorders, human Parvovirus B19 (HPV B19) is frequently involved in pure red-cell aplastic crises. Furthermore, it may inhibit three-lineage haematopoiesis in the bone marrow, causing severe pancytopenia. In such patients, Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infection also seems to share the same mechanism as HPV B19 in inducing bone marrow aplasia...

P 28: Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Reduces Neuroinflammation and Splenic Cytolytic CD8 + T Cells in Mice with Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been recognized as a common neurodegenerative disease that occurs after an Auto reactive T cells against myelin antigens.  Demyelination and inflammation are the main features of this disease. The anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective roles of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) have been considered as a suitable tre...

The Spherocytic Haemolytic Anaemias

The diagnosis of haemolytic anaemia is made when circulating red blood cell (RBC) survival is shortened. Today, the laboratory findings in haemolytic anaemia and the distinction between inherited and acquired forms are studied by preclinical medical students the world over. Although haemolytic anaemia is much less common than anaemia as a result of marrow failure or bleeding, general physicians...

Anti B cell targeted immunotherapy for treatment of refractory autoimmune haemolytic anaemia in a young infant.

We report the case of an 8 week old infant with fulminant autoimmune haemolytic anaemia refractory to conventional immunomodulating treatment. Massive haemolysis resulted in cardiac decompensation and acute renal failure which necessitated mechanical ventilation and peritoneal dialysis. Rituximab, a chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, halted progression of the haemolytic process, but the pa...
